Addition Within 10 Using Pictures

What to do

You are adding two small groups of pictured objects. The total will be 10 or less.

Method

1. Count the first group of pictures.
2. Count the second group.
3. Combine the counts and say the total.
4. If it helps, touch or mark each picture as you count so you do not skip or repeat one.

Helpful idea

Addition means putting groups together. For small numbers, you can count all the pictures from the start, or count on from the first group. For example, if one group has 3 objects and the other has 2, you count 3, then 4, 5.

Check your answer

Make sure your total matches the number of pictures in both groups together. The answer should not be more than 10. If the pictures are arranged in a line or a cluster, recount carefully if the total seems wrong.
