Build the Number

A place value tells how much a digit is worth based on its position. When you are given place-value parts, your job is to combine them into one whole number.

1) Identify each part

Read each value carefully and decide what place it belongs to:

• hundreds
• tens
• ones
• or any larger place shown

For example, 300 means 3 hundreds, 40 means 4 tens, and 7 means 7 ones.

2) Put the parts together

Add the values from left to right by place. If the parts are 300, 40, and 7, combine them as:

• 300 + 40 + 7 = 347

If a place is missing, it means that place has 0. For example, 500 + 6 = 506.

3) Write the number in standard form

Make sure the digits line up with their places. Do not add the digits separately unless they belong to the same place-value parts.

4) Check your answer

Read the number back in expanded form and see if it matches the given parts. For 347, the expanded form is 300 + 40 + 7, so the answer is correct.
