Choose the Best Data Display
When you are asked to choose the best data display, focus on what kind of data you have and what you want to show.
1) Identify the data type
- Categories or groups: choose a display that compares counts or amounts across groups.
- Numerical values: choose a display that shows patterns, distribution, or change.
2) Match the display to the goal
Ask yourself:
- Do I want to compare groups? Use a display that makes side-by-side comparison easy.
- Do I want to show how data changes over time? Use a display that highlights trends.
- Do I want to show parts of a whole? Use a display that shows proportions clearly.
- Do I want to show the spread of numerical data? Use a display that shows variation well.
3) Eliminate poor choices
A good display should be easy to read and should not hide important features of the data. Avoid a display that makes comparisons difficult or adds unnecessary clutter.
4) Check your answer
After choosing a display, ask:
- Does it match the data type?
- Does it answer the question asked?
- Will it be clear to someone reading it?
If the display fits the data and purpose, it is the best choice.
