Positive, Negative, or No Correlation

Go to Math Operation

1) Identify the trend in the data

A correlation describes how two variables change together.

  • Positive correlation: as one variable increases, the other tends to increase.
  • Negative correlation: as one variable increases, the other tends to decrease.
  • No correlation: there is no clear pattern linking the variables.

2) Look for the direction of change

Read the values carefully and compare the two variables across the data set.

  • If the pairs generally move up together, the correlation is positive.
  • If one moves up while the other moves down, the correlation is negative.
  • If the points or pairs seem mixed with no consistent pattern, there is no correlation.

3) Choose the correct classification

For these exercises, the answer is usually just the type of correlation. Make your choice based on the overall pattern, not on one unusual data point.

4) Check your answer

A good check is to ask: “If the first variable gets larger, what usually happens to the second?”

  • Larger with larger → positive
  • Larger with smaller → negative
  • No consistent change → no correlation

If the final answer must be simplified, give only the classification required and avoid extra detail unless asked.
