What to do

When you see a picture with objects, your job is to count all the items and write the number that matches.

Step-by-step method

1. Look carefully at the picture. Identify every object you need to count.
2. Count one by one. Touch or point to each object as you say the numbers in order: 1, 2, 3, and so on.
3. Do not skip or count twice. Move through the picture in a clear path so every object is counted exactly once.
4. Write the numeral. After counting, write the single number that shows how many objects there are.

Helpful tip

If the objects are close together, count them in small groups and then combine the groups. For example, count a row, then the next row.

Check your answer

Go back and count again a second time. If you get the same total, your numeral is likely correct. Make sure the number you wrote matches the total number of objects in the picture.
