Create a Line Graph
A line graph shows how a quantity changes across ordered values, often over time. To make one correctly, the points must be plotted in the right order and connected clearly.
1) Read the data carefully
- Identify the two variables: the ordered category or time goes on the horizontal axis, and the measured value goes on the vertical axis.
- Check the scale on each axis before plotting anything.
2) Plot each point
- For each pair of values, move to the correct position on the x-axis, then up or down to the matching y-value.
- Mark each point accurately so the graph reflects the data exactly.
3) Connect the points
- Join the points in order with straight line segments unless the instructions say otherwise.
- Keep the line smooth and make sure the graph is easy to follow.
4) Simplify the final answer
- If you are asked for a final value, read it directly from the graph and write it in simplest form.
- Use the graph to compare increases, decreases, or constant sections if needed.
Check your work
- Confirm that every point matches the data table.
- Make sure the axis labels, scale, and order of points are correct.
- A quick visual check can reveal missed points or incorrect connections.
