Create a Stem-and-Leaf Plot

What a stem-and-leaf plot shows

A stem-and-leaf plot organizes numerical data while keeping the original values visible. It is useful for checking the shape of the data and seeing individual numbers at the same time.

How to build one

  1. Choose the stem and the leaf

    • The stem is usually the leading digit(s).
    • The leaf is the last digit.
    • For example, with two-digit numbers, the tens digit is the stem and the ones digit is the leaf.
  2. List the stems in order Write the stems vertically from smallest to largest.

  3. Add the leaves Place each number’s leaf beside its stem.

    • Keep leaves in ascending order.
    • Include every value from the data set.
  4. Add a key if needed A key explains how to read the plot, such as “3 | 7 means 37.”

Check your work

  • Make sure every data value appears once.
  • Make sure the leaves are sorted.
  • Read the plot back into numbers to confirm the original data set is preserved.

Simplify the final answer

If the exercise asks for a final response, give the completed stem-and-leaf plot neatly, with stems aligned and leaves ordered. If a key is required, include it clearly.
