Estimate a Number on a Number Line

Estimate using the labeled endpoints

When a point is shown on a number line, the two labeled endpoints tell you the interval. Your job is to judge where the point falls between them.

1) Identify the endpoints

Read the numbers at the ends of the labeled part of the line. These tell you the starting and ending values.

2) Compare the point’s position

Look at how far the point is from the left endpoint and the right endpoint. If it is near the middle, estimate about halfway. If it is closer to one endpoint, choose a value closer to that number.

3) Use the interval to estimate

Think about the total distance between the endpoints and how the segment may be divided into equal parts. Count the spaces if they are visible, then decide which value the point is closest to.

4) Give a reasonable estimate

Your answer does not need to be exact, but it should match the point’s position on the line.

Quick check

Ask: Does my estimate place the point in the right part of the interval? Is it closer to the correct endpoint? If yes, your estimate is reasonable.
