Estimating Quotients

When you estimate a quotient, you find a division answer that is close enough to the exact value. This is useful when you need a quick answer or when the numbers are awkward to divide exactly.

1) Look for a nearby friendly number

Choose a number that is easy to divide by the divisor. Usually, you round the dividend, the divisor, or both to values that make mental division easier.

2) Divide using the rounded numbers

Compute the simpler division problem. For example, if the numbers are close to 120 ÷ 6, you can estimate using that easier fact instead of a more difficult exact division.

3) Decide whether your estimate is reasonable

Your estimate should be close to the original problem. If you rounded up, the quotient may be a little larger; if you rounded down, it may be a little smaller.

4) Check your estimate

Use multiplication to test your answer: divisor × quotient should be near the dividend. If it is far away, choose a better rounded number and try again.

Helpful habit

Keep track of whether your estimate is an overestimate or an underestimate. That helps you judge whether your result makes sense.
