Count Faces, Edges, and Vertices
When you work with a solid shape, count each type of part separately:
- Faces are flat surfaces. Look at every surface you can touch that is flat.
- Edges are line segments where two faces meet. Trace the boundaries between faces.
- Vertices are corner points where edges meet.
A careful counting method
- Start at one part of the shape and move around it in a regular order.
- Mark each face, edge, or vertex as you count it so you do not count it twice.
- If the object has hidden parts in a drawing, count only the parts that belong to the solid, not extra lines from the picture.
Check your work
A good check is to compare your counts with the structure of the shape. For example, the number of edges should connect the faces logically, and the number of vertices should match the corners you can identify. If your counts seem inconsistent, recount one category at a time.

If the exercise asks for a combined answer, simplify it as instructed and make sure each count is written clearly before combining anything.
