Fraction word problems
Fraction word problems ask you to turn a story into a fraction calculation. The key skill is identifying what the whole is, what part is being used or compared, and whether you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
1) Read for the meaning of the fraction
- Look for words like part of, of, shared equally, each, remaining, altogether.
- Decide what quantity represents the whole. If the whole is unclear, define it from the problem.
2) Translate the story into math
- Part of a quantity often means multiplication: fraction of a number.
- Equal sharing often means division: total number of groups.
- Combining or comparing parts often means addition or subtraction.
3) Compute and simplify
Work carefully with fractions, then simplify the final answer to lowest terms when possible. If a mixed number appears, reduce any improper fraction if needed.
4) Check your answer
Ask: Does the answer make sense in context? For example, a “part” should not be larger than the whole, and a shared amount should match the number of groups.
Quick strategy
- Identify the whole.
- Mark the fraction and the operation.
- Calculate exactly.
- Simplify and interpret the result in words.
