When you see a 3D object, first decide whether it is a solid with length, width, and height. Then identify the exact name by looking at its faces, edges, and curved surfaces.
1) Look at the shape carefully
- Count the flat faces.
- Notice whether any faces are all the same shape.
- Check for curved surfaces.
- Look for special features like one base, two identical bases, or a pointed top.
2) Match the features to the solid
Use these common clues:
- Cube: 6 equal square faces.
- Rectangular prism: 6 rectangular faces.
- Triangular prism: 2 triangular bases and rectangular side faces.
- Cylinder: 2 circular bases and 1 curved surface.
- Cone: 1 circular base and 1 pointed top.
- Sphere: fully curved, no flat faces.

3) Answer exactly
Write the solid’s name clearly and use the simplest correct label.
4) Check your answer
Ask: Does the shape have flat faces or curved parts? How many bases does it have? If your answer matches those features, it is likely correct.
