Improper Fraction to Mixed Number

An improper fraction has a numerator that is greater than or equal to the denominator. To write it as a mixed number, separate the whole part from the remaining fraction.

1) Divide the numerator by the denominator

  • The quotient becomes the whole number.
  • The remainder becomes the new numerator.
  • Keep the same denominator.

Example: ( \frac{17}{5} )

  • 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2
  • So ( \frac{17}{5} = 3\frac{2}{5} )

2) Write the mixed number

Use: [ \text{quotient} ; \text{remainder}/\text{denominator} ] If the remainder is 0, the fraction is a whole number.

3) Check your answer

Convert the mixed number back to an improper fraction:

  • Multiply the whole number by the denominator
  • Add the numerator
  • Keep the same denominator

For ( 3\frac{2}{5} ):

  • (3 \times 5 + 2 = 17)
  • So the answer is correct.

Quick tip

If the fraction is already less than 1, it is not improper and should not be changed into a mixed number.
