Literal equations: how to solve them

Literal equations are equations with several variables. Your job is to rearrange the formula so that one chosen variable is isolated.

1) Identify the variable to solve for

Look carefully at the instruction and decide which letter must be alone on one side of the equation.

2) Undo operations step by step

Use inverse operations just as you would in a regular equation:

  • add or subtract the same term on both sides to move terms away from the target variable
  • multiply or divide both sides to remove coefficients
  • if the variable appears in more than one term, combine like terms first when possible

3) Keep the equation balanced

Whatever you do to one side must be done to the other side. Work slowly and rewrite each step clearly.

4) Simplify the final expression

The final answer should be as simple as possible. If fractions appear, reduce them when you can. If the variable is in a denominator, be careful to clear it correctly without changing the balance of the equation.

5) Check your result

Substitute your expression back into the original equation when possible. If both sides match after simplification, your rearrangement is correct.

A good literal-equation solution is not just solved; it is cleanly isolated and simplified.
