Map Scale Distance: How to Solve

1. Identify the scale
   Read the map scale carefully. It tells you what real-life distance matches 1 unit on the map, or another stated ratio.

2. Match the map measurement
   Find the distance shown on the map. Make sure both the map distance and the scale use the same units before doing any calculation.

3. Set up a proportion or multiplication
   If 1 map unit represents a certain real distance, multiply the map distance by that real distance. If the scale is written as a ratio, keep the units consistent and compare the two quantities.

4. Simplify the answer
   Reduce the result to its simplest exact form if needed. If the problem gives a fraction, mixed number, or ratio, leave the final answer in simplest form.

Check your work

• Make sure the answer is reasonable: a longer map distance should give a longer real distance.
• Verify that the units in the final answer make sense for the scale given.
• If you used a proportion, check that both ratios are equivalent.
