1) Read the story carefully

Multi-step multiplication and division stories ask you to solve a word problem in more than one step. First, identify what is known, what needs to be found, and which operation belongs to each part of the story.

• Many problems require both: use one operation to find an intermediate result, then use the other to finish.

Write each step on a separate line. Label the numbers if helpful. For example, calculate the first quantity, then use that answer in the second step. Keep units consistent throughout the problem.

4) Check your result

Ask whether the answer makes sense in the context of the story. A quick check can be done by estimating, or by using the inverse operation if it fits the situation. Make sure the final number matches the question asked.

5) Common mistakes to avoid

Do not use the numbers in the order they appear without understanding the story. Be careful not to mix up multiplication and division. Also check whether the answer should be a whole number and whether the units are correct.
