What a fact family is
A multiplication and division fact family uses the same three numbers to make related equations. If you know the product and one factor, you can find the other factor and the two division facts.
How to complete the facts
- Identify the three numbers in the family: two factors and their product.
- Write the multiplication facts: factor × factor = product.
- Write the division facts: product ÷ factor = factor.
- Use the relationship to fill in any missing number. If one multiplication fact is correct, the other related facts should also be correct.
Example pattern
If 4, 6, and 24 are in the family:
- 4 × 6 = 24
- 6 × 4 = 24
- 24 ÷ 4 = 6
- 24 ÷ 6 = 4
Check your answer
- Make sure the same three numbers appear in every equation.
- Multiply to verify the product.
- Divide to confirm each missing factor.
- If the numbers do not match in all related facts, recheck your work.
