One-step multiplication and division story problems describe a real situation and ask you to find one missing quantity. The key is to decide whether the situation means equal groups, repeated addition, sharing equally, or splitting into groups.
How to solve
- Read the story carefully. Identify what is known and what is being asked.
- Look for clue words and the structure.
- Multiplication: equal groups, each, every, times, altogether.
- Division: shared equally, split, per group, how many in each, how many groups.
- Write the operation.
- Multiply when you know the number of groups and the number in each group.
- Divide when you know the total and need the number in each group or the number of groups.
- Compute the answer. Use exact arithmetic.
- Simplify the final answer. Give the result in its simplest form and include the correct unit if the story uses one.
Check your work
Make sure your answer matches the story meaning. For multiplication, ask whether the total should be larger than the starting numbers. For division, check that multiplying your answer by the divisor gives the original total. This quick check helps catch reversed operations.
