Multiplying by 2

Multiplication by 2 means doubling. For any number, you are finding what you get when you take that number two times.

A reliable method

1. Read the fact carefully. Identify the number being multiplied by 2.
2. Double it. You can think of it as adding the number to itself: n × 2 = n + n.
3. Use known patterns. Answers to times-2 facts are all even numbers.
4. Check your result. Add the number to itself again or count forward by 2 to see if the answer matches.

Helpful examples

• 3 × 2 = 3 + 3 = 6
• 7 × 2 = 7 + 7 = 14
• 10 × 2 = 10 + 10 = 20

Quick check

If your answer is not even, it is probably wrong. Another good check is to reverse the fact: if 6 is the answer, ask whether 3 × 2 gives 6.
