Multiply Mixed Numbers
Mixed numbers combine a whole number and a fraction, so the main task is to turn them into easier-to-multiply forms.
Method
- Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction.
- Multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator.
- Keep the same denominator.
- Multiply the fractions.
- Multiply numerators together.
- Multiply denominators together.
- Simplify the result.
- Reduce the fraction to lowest terms.
- If the answer is improper, you may also change it back to a mixed number if needed.
Example structure
If you have something like mixed number × mixed number, first rewrite both numbers as improper fractions, then multiply straight across.
Check your work
- Make sure each mixed number was converted correctly.
- After multiplying, see whether the fraction can be simplified by a common factor.
- A quick estimate can help: round each mixed number to nearby whole numbers to see whether your exact answer is reasonable.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not multiply the whole numbers separately from the fractions. Convert first, then multiply.
With practice, the process becomes routine: convert, multiply, simplify.
