Ordering Fractions

To order fractions, compare their values carefully rather than comparing numerators or denominators separately. A fraction with a larger numerator is not always larger overall, and a larger denominator does not always mean a larger value.

A reliable method

  1. Look for a common denominator. Rewrite each fraction so they all have the same denominator. Then compare the numerators only.
  2. Or convert to decimals if that is easier and allowed by the exercise. This can make the order easy to see.
  3. Pay attention to signs if negative fractions appear: more negative means smaller.
  4. Simplify exact answers when you rewrite fractions. Reduce them to lowest terms if possible.

Example strategy

If you need to place fractions from least to greatest, first make them comparable. Once the denominators match, the fraction with the smallest numerator is the smallest fraction, and so on.

Check your work

After ordering, quickly verify by comparing each pair in the final list. Make sure the sequence increases step by step, and confirm that any rewritten fractions are equivalent to the originals.
