Place Value Identification

Go to Math Operation

What to do

You are given a whole number and one selected digit. Your task is to find the value of that digit, not just the digit itself.

Key idea

A digit’s value depends on its place in the number. For example, the same digit can mean 3 ones, 3 tens, 3 hundreds, and so on.

Steps

  1. Locate the selected digit in the number.
  2. Count its position from right to left:
    • ones place
    • tens place
    • hundreds place
    • thousands place, etc.
  3. Multiply the digit by the place value.
    • ones = digit × 1
    • tens = digit × 10
    • hundreds = digit × 100
    • thousands = digit × 1000
  4. Write the final value.

Example method

If the selected digit is 4 in the hundreds place, its value is 4 × 100 = 400.

Check your answer

Make sure you did not give the digit alone. The answer should match the place: tens end in 0, hundreds end in 00, thousands end in 000, and so on.
