Round to the Nearest Hundred

Rounding to the nearest hundred means replacing a whole number with the closest multiple of 100: 0, 100, 200, 300, and so on.

1) Find the hundreds around the number

Look at the two hundreds the number falls between. For example, 347 is between 300 and 400.

2) Compare to the midpoint

The midpoint between 300 and 400 is 350. If the number is less than 350, round down to 300. If it is 350 or more, round up to 400.

3) Keep only the hundreds digit as needed

When rounding a whole number, the digits after the hundreds place are replaced by zeros. So 347 becomes 300 and 684 becomes 700.

Quick check

Ask: Which hundred is closer? You can compare the distance to each hundred. For 347, the distance to 300 is 47 and the distance to 400 is 53, so 300 is closer.

Important idea

Numbers ending in 50 or more round up to the next hundred. Numbers ending in 49 or less round down to the previous hundred.

Use this same method for every number: locate the two nearest hundreds, compare to the midpoint, and choose the closer hundred.
