Shade a model to match a fraction

This task asks you to show a fraction by shading part of a picture or shape. A fraction tells how many equal parts are shaded out of the total number of equal parts.

1) Read the fraction carefully

  • The denominator tells the total number of equal parts in the model.
  • The numerator tells how many of those parts should be shaded.

2) Count the equal parts

Look at the model and make sure the parts are equal. If the shape is split into 4 equal parts, then each part represents one-fourth.

3) Shade the correct number of parts

Shade exactly the number shown by the numerator.

  • For 3/4, shade 3 out of 4 equal parts.
  • For 2/5, shade 2 out of 5 equal parts.

4) Check your work

Ask yourself:

  • Did I shade the right number of parts?
  • Are all the parts the same size?
  • Did I leave the correct number unshaded?

If the shaded parts and total parts match the fraction, your answer is correct.
