Count by Twos

Skip counting by 2s means adding 2 each time in a forward sequence or subtracting 2 each time in a backward sequence. Each term stays evenly spaced from the previous one.

1) Look at the direction

  • If the numbers are getting bigger, add 2.
  • If the numbers are getting smaller, subtract 2.

2) Continue the pattern

Start from the last shown number and move by 2 each step:

  • Forward: 4, 6, 8, 10, ...
  • Backward: 18, 16, 14, 12, ...

3) Fill in missing numbers carefully

Write each new number in order, making sure every step changes by exactly 2. If a number is missing in the middle, use the numbers around it to keep the same pattern.

4) Check your work

Read the completed sequence aloud and verify that every pair of neighboring numbers differs by 2. If one jump is 1, 3, or anything else, the pattern is not correct.

Quick tip

Counting by 2s is a good way to notice even-number patterns and to keep sequences organized.
