Subtraction Without Regrouping

When subtracting multi-digit whole numbers without regrouping, each digit in the top number is large enough to subtract the digit below it. That means you can work one place value at a time from right to left without borrowing from the next column.

Method

  1. Line up the numbers by place value. Put ones under ones, tens under tens, hundreds under hundreds, and so on.
  2. Start with the rightmost column. Subtract the bottom digit from the top digit in that place.
  3. Move left one column at a time. Repeat the same subtraction in each place.
  4. Write the result digits in order. Keep each digit in its correct place value.

Example idea

If you have a subtraction like a three-digit number minus another three-digit number and no digit in the top number is smaller than the digit below it, you simply subtract each column separately.

Check your work

Use addition to verify: add the answer to the number you subtracted. If the total matches the original top number, your subtraction is correct.

Common mistake to avoid

Do not skip place value alignment. Even when no borrowing is needed, correct column placement is essential for the answer to be right.
