Volume by Counting Unit Cubes

When a solid is built from unit cubes, its volume is the number of cubes that fill it completely. A unit cube has side length 1, so each cube contributes 1 cubic unit.

How to find the volume

1. Count the cubes in one layer. Look at the base or a single horizontal row of cubes.
2. Count how many layers are stacked. If the shape has equal layers, multiply the cubes per layer by the number of layers.
3. If some cubes are hidden, use the pattern. Shapes are often arranged in rows, columns, and stacks that repeat.
4. Write the result in cubic units. For example, a count of 12 means the volume is 12 cubic units.

Good check

Make sure every visible cube is counted once and only once. If the shape has a regular rectangular arrangement, you can also check by multiplying length × width × height in cubes.

Common mistake to avoid

Do not count the edges or faces separately. Volume counts the space filled by cubes, not the outside surface.
