What “word form” means
A decimal in word form is written using words instead of digits. Read the whole number part first, then say the decimal part by place value.
Method
- Read the number to the decimal point as a whole number.
- Say “and” where the decimal point is.
- Read the digits after the decimal according to the last place value.
- 1 digit after the decimal: tenths
- 2 digits: hundredths
- 3 digits: thousandths
- Write the result clearly in words.
Example pattern
- 3.4 → three and four tenths
- 12.08 → twelve and eight hundredths
- 0.305 → zero and three hundred five thousandths
How to check your answer
- Make sure the number before the decimal is written as a whole number.
- Make sure the last digit determines the place value name.
- If there are zeros in the decimal part, keep them in mind because they affect the place value.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not read each digit separately unless the place value requires it. For example, 0.25 is not “zero point two five” in word form; it is zero and twenty-five hundredths.
