Write Numbers in Standard Form
Expanded notation shows a number as a sum of its place values. To write it in standard form, combine the parts into one ordinary whole number.
Method
- Read each term by place value.
- For example, a term like 300 means 3 hundreds.
- A term like 40 means 4 tens.
- A term like 6 means 6 ones.
- Add the values together.
- Put the hundreds, tens, and ones in the correct order.
- If there are thousands or larger places, include those too.
- Write the final number without plus signs.
- The result should be a single whole number.
Example idea
If a number is written as 400 + 50 + 8, combine the parts:
- 400 = 4 hundreds
- 50 = 5 tens
- 8 = 8 ones
So the standard form is 458.
Check your answer
- Does each part of the expanded form appear in the final number?
- Are the digits in the correct place-value order?
- Is the answer written as one whole number?
A good way to avoid mistakes is to line up the place values before combining them.
